10 Tips on How to Cope with Holiday Stress

The winter holiday season, considered the most beautiful and miraculous time of the year, becomes the most stressful for some people. As the holidays approach, they become increasingly stressed, anxious, and even depressed.

The reasons for this can vary widely. I can tell you from the experience of some of my patients that the most common causes are: overspending, shopping addiction, fear of loneliness, or loneliness itself… Instead of enjoying the holiday atmosphere, they are likely to feel irritated by the crowds of people, the worries about gifts, the hustle and bustle…

For all of my patients and those who also face stress this time of year, I recommend that you look at some methods on how to relax, get rid of anxiety, stay healthy and energized. From stress management strategies to different foods that will give you a boost of energy and optimism, here are 10 tips to help you get into the holiday spirit!

1. Enjoy the sunshine and light

Enjoy sunlight and take a walk outdoors. The sun stimulates serotonin production, helping to alleviate seasonal affective disorder. Regular walks have a calming effect on the brain, helping to reduce anxiety and improve sleep. If you don't have the opportunity to spend time outdoors regularly, you can enjoy the sun by facing the window on bright days.

2. Aromatherapy with citrus essences

In studies related to depression, some citrus scents have been found to have a beneficial effect, creating a sense of comfort and relieving stress. For example, you can keep a handkerchief with some drops of lemon or orange essential oil on it in your pocket and inhale it when you feel overwhelmed.

3. Acupressure

The place between the index finger and thumb is known in traditional Chinese medicine as the hoku point. Pressing this point for 30 seconds reduces stress and relieves tension in the upper body. So, if you feel overloaded by the stress of the holidays, press this point and take deep breaths.

4. Identify your capabilities

Admit to yourself that you are only human and cannot manage to do everything. You don't have to attend all the events, bake all the treats, or personally wrap all the gifts. Define for yourself in advance the boundaries of what is possible. Decide where you need to draw the line, and don't be afraid to say "No" if an action or event doesn't match realistic possibilities. Moreover, this magic word will help not only in the question of "how to spend a stress-free winter season", but also in life in general.

5. Consume sweet, healthy products

According to experts, the consumption of sweet but natural products (raisins, dates, figs, etc.) is indicated during this period, as their taste brings a state of pleasure and relaxation.

6. Strengthen your immune system

There is nothing more unpleasant during the Christmas season than a cold, which can ruin all plans and cause a lot of stress. To protect yourself during the winter months, add enough fruit and vegetables to your diet, get enough sleep and practice good personal hygiene.

7. Don't be afraid to ask for help

Whether it's cooking, cleaning or emotional support, don't do everything alone. Ask family and friends to help you and don't try to do everything at once alone. Don't let the stress of the holiday season steal your joy. If you didn't have time to do everything you planned, don't blame yourself because constant guilt can cause chronic stress

8. Put on some music

Feeling stressed? Listen to music that you like.

Many scientific studies have already proved that listening to your favorite music can relax blood vessels and improve blood flow. Thus, you will become calmer and your heart will be healthier.

9. Limit your use of cell phones, tablets and TV

All of these devices keep you in a constant state of stress. Not only do they drain your energy, but they also contribute to higher stress levels, especially for women. Holidays are the perfect time to turn off all the gadgets and spend time with friends and family.

Trust me, the less flashy festive images and commercials in front of you, the easier it will be for you to endure the agitation.

10. Relax

Take a break from all the hustle and bustle and try doing something you enjoy. Go to the gym, take a bath or read a good book – any activity you know will relax you.

Stress during the holidays is a pretty common occurrence. If you follow my tips, the holidays will stop being the scariest time of the year. Don't let stress ruin your holidays!
